That gentlemen and ladies is how 99% of us ride our bikes. The 551 is designed for touring bikes or touring-style riding. The Easy-Start series of cams has a built-in compression release mechanism that lets the engine start easier by reducing compression at start-up rpm's. It is a bolt-in cam for this machine, meaning that I didn't need to replace valve spring or do any head work. This was more than on most bikes because of extra work needed due to an oil cooler being in the way and some issues with the D&D Fat Cat exhaust.

Leo and AJ at Open Road Cycles did the work. In fact the entire cam replacement process is easier than on previous motors. The later model cam tenisoners are an improvement over earlier versions. The cam tensioners were in good condition. They would probably have led to a failure at some future date. While the bearing were still functioning, I was not impressed with the rough spots. This does not appear to be an uncommon occurrence in Harley cam bearings. On disassembly two rough spots were discovered in the cam bearing. The only practical reason to consider new cams was that after 30k miles I wanted to look at the cam bearing as well as the cam chain tensioners. The Dyna never suffered from a lack of power. Unlike the other mods, there was no compelling reason to change the cams in this machine. After making a few modifications to the bike to improve handling and ride, I decided to change the cams. I have a 2009 Dyna Super Glide with 30k on it.
